wwdiary - version 4.1.4 posted to Android Market

Happy New Year! (almost)

Some new updates before the new year:
  • New default weight unit display option in settings and from menu in weight log screen.
  • Entering in a weight with no units (ex. "200") will assume the units of the default weight unit in settings.
(UK users take note that it will assume stones only, not a mix of st and lb. You should always provide units if you use stones.)
  • New quick menu for the weight log.
  • Other minor bug fixes.

This is another installment of updates for the new PointsPlus changes.
  • New weight entry dialog
  • New DPA calculator for PointsPlus system
  • You can still use the old DPA calculator
  • You can now enter in units for weight (pounds, kilos, stones).

The weight log has been effected, so please read the two new posts on the forum carefully:

wwdiary - version 3.9.7 posted to Android Market

I've gotten a few reports from users about how if they set their weekly point allowances higher, they would still only ever be able to use a max of 35 weekly points.  This issue is corrected in this update.

Also, some additional work around barcode scanning is underway, and some of the work is being moved out in this update.  You shouldn't see any changes yet, but if you do see something wrong please let me know.

wwdiary - version 3.9.5 posted to Android Market

You can now edit how many weekly points (flex points) you have for a week.

Also, I've been working to make sure that phones with SenseUI and MotoBlur show the theme for WWDiary the way it looks in the screenshots.  On some phones it looks weird, because the native theme has been customized.

I hope to one day theme the entire application to look smooth and consistent, so first I'm working on getting all phones looking like the screenshots.  Then down the road, hopefully I'll have time to work on a better looking overall theme.

Please, if you see any inconsistencies let me know.   Selection color should be orange (yeah I know not everyone will like this, but I need to identify all the areas in my custom theme before I work on replacing it.)  Buttons should be a light gray.  I think I may have missed the text box selection colors, those may appear blue on some phones.    Let me know if I missed anything else ( I don't have a phone to reproduce this, I've only seen it in app reviews and screenshots).

New forum software update

I'm moving my forum software to a new version.

Those of you who have signed in via google will have your passwords reset to a new generated value and emailed to you.  When you log in via google again, it will ask you to connect to your old ID, just give it the password you were emailed.

wwdiary - version 3.9.4 posted to Android Market

In a past update I moved the files on the sdcard to a more standard location.  This resulted in the unintended consequence of backup files being deleted when the app was uninstalled.   This update restores the original location of files so that they will not be removed and you can keep your data.

This update also includes some performance and widget update fixes.  Thanks to Walter for helping me track them down!

wwdiary - version 3.9.3 posted to Android Market

Thank you for your continued donations, suggestions, and error reports!
Feedback helps me make the app better :)

This version includes:
  • A slight performance improvement over the last version. I think this will fix the
"database is locked" error messages that some users have been sending in reports for.
  • Bug fix: Custom formula works again. Sorry about that.
  • Bug fix: Widget updates should not flash the ui of other widgets.  You may need to remove and re-add the points widget to your home screen.

wwdiary - version 3.9.2 posted to Android Market

New widget to display how many points you have left for the day!

This version also contains bug fixes:
  • Widget updates should not go haywire anymore.
  • Blank custom formulas and incorrect formulas will no longer send an error report. The default value will be used or an error message will appear, respectively.
  • You can no longer enter in negative fiber values.

Also, I have not made any changes to the app yet to implement the new WW system.  All of the changes mentioned in the last update were in preparation for a change.  To the best of my ability, I'm going to allow people to use the system that they feel most comfortable with.  It will eventually require you to modify defaults, but when I change to use the new system, I'll post a tutorial on how to revert the new behavior.

wwdiary - version 3.9.1 posted to Android Market

WW is changing their system in the US.  To me at least, the changes look good, but I know not everyone always will feel that way.   So I'm making a few changes to allow people to make additional tweaks to the system of their choosing.

One of those tweaks is the ability to enter in your own custom formula for food point calculations.  Check out preferences at the bottom in the hacks section and read here to learn about constructing your own formula.  The forum is a good place to ask questions and get help.  Share any good formulas you come up with!

This change has the added benefit of letting those users in the UK who are dissatisfied with the formula I've been trying unsuccessfully(it seems) to implement tweak their own and hopefully share it with the rest of the community.

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR DONATING!!!

It really is very appreciated!

wwdiary - version 3.8.8 posted to Android Market

Font colors for the weekly and activity points have been darkened on the phones where they appear very light.

Non US locales can now enter in decimal weights.
I understand that many countries use a comma "," and not a period "." as the decimal character when writing numbers.  However, there is a bug in Android where decimal numbers are not recognized according to the locale they are set for.  This means that an edit box that accepts decimal numbers will not allow a comma.

There's not much I can do about this until it's fixed in Android.   So for the time being, I've tried to make all number values that display only show in the format you are used to.   But whenever you have to enter in a decimal number, you'll have to use the period "." character.

wwdiary - version 3.8.7 posted to Android Market

In this version:

  • Another fix for the widget update problem.  (Hopefully the last :)
  • Bug fix: leaving fiber blank in food calculator would assume a value of -1  (yipes!)
  • Data files on the sdcard have moved from '/sdcard/com.canofsleep.wwdiary' to '/sdcard/Android/data/com.canofsleep.wwdiary' so don't panic if you can't find the backup files right away.
The last change is to keep in line with Android best practices, and to reduce clutter on the users' sdcard.

wwdiary - version 3.8.6 posted to Android Market

  • Fix for Android 1.5 devices not able to open the What's new page.
  • Possible fix for a reported problem where widget would not update.

wwdiary - version 3.8.5 posted to Android Market

New widget in this version that should make everyone happy :)
It will display total weight lost or gained by using entries in the weightlog of the application. (nothing too fancy quite yet)

I've added an integration of the new PayPal libraries so anyone with a PayPal account can easily donate.

Fixed some issues with the UK calculations. Please, people from the UK provide more feedback on how accurate the calculations are. There is very little accurate information on how these are done.

Added a "clear all" button to the water/dairy/veg sliding drawer so that un-selecting them once selected will be easier for some people.

Added a new option to "brag" about a weightloss entry on your phone by long-pressing it. Can be sent via email, sms, twitter, or anything else that implements ACTION_SEND. May of you have asked for some sort of reporting options, and this is the first step in that direction.

Like I said before, I'll be working on integration of the PointsList app on the android market. Hopefully we can have things working soon. :)

And as always, donations are very much appreciated. And a HUGE thank you to every who has already donated!

Points List Integration

This is on the horizon. I got in touch with the developer and we will both be working on a method of doing some point lookups from wwdiary using his program, and also adding food items from his program using wwdiary.

Droid X Update

If you have a Droid X and are having problems with wwdiary or a few other apps, chances are that you have not applied the latest update released for your phone (this morning, I believe).

After applying the update pushed out by Verizon, the wwdiary app should behave well.  There are some theme problems, but I'll look into those.

Droid X issues

I'm currently aware of some issues trying to use wwdiary on the Droid X.
Either force closes, or the app quitting immediately...

I'm looking into it and have an email to Motorola on the subject.  I haven't gotten any error reports either through the app or the android market place ( where force close reports usually show up ).  I'm still trying to get my hands on a Droid X to debug, I can't just walk into a store and hook their display model up to my laptop :)

I'll post here again when I get more info.

3.8.1 - UK Point Allowance Calculator Test Version

Download here.

Please test this version if you can.  Let me know if the point values you get are accurate for the UK system.
Also if you are in the US and want to test, please make sure I didn't screw anything up in the old calculator :)

Please post feedback on the forum, here.

wwdiary - version 3.8 posted to Android Market

This version bring some new localization changes for the UK.  The food calculator has been replaced (for uk users) with one that should mirror what the UK WW system does (kcal and sat fat), so hopefully the point calculation is correct.  Please go post feed back on the forum!
I'm still in need of information on how to calculate your daily point allowance, and details about how UK plans work w.r.t. flex points and activity points.

This version also fixes the bug where food calculator values where not being auto filled in when you added an item by the favorites menu.

Also, I'm still working on a fix for Sony Xperia phones.   I have a few email conversations on the subject.  Some Xperia users have posted some workarounds for the time being on how you can get the decimal key back.  Please post on the forums asking for help if you need it.

wwdiary - version 3.7.10 posted to Android Market

  • Fixed a bug where the phone pad number input was not showing in point and activity calculators.

It seems that users of the Sony Xperia X10 cannot see a decimal key with the phone keyboard layout. Can other users of that device confirm?  Do any other devices have a similar problem?

wwdiary - version 3.7.9 posted to Android Market

This version has some bug fixes and some enhancements that users have been asking for.
  • All number entry fields should now use a phone pad input style for easier number hitting
  • Favorites sorting may now be toggled either by an option in the menu or in preferences.
  • Some minor bug fixes around database restore and database reporting.

wwdiary - version 3.7.7 posted to Android Market

This version fixes a problem with fractional point entry in locales that use a comma ( , ) instead of a period ( . ) as a decimal separator.  There is a bug in android that has yet to be fixed where text fields that are set as number fields do not obey the locale settings for decimal places, you must always use a period.  So this change always looks for a period instead of the locale's specific number formatting.

This version also fixes a bug where water/veg/dairy values were not properly being applied on items entered using the favorites list.

wwdiary - version 3.7.6 posted to Android Market

No you weren't crazy...   the restore database option was broken.   Now it works :)
This also includes a workaround and some notification of a problem I'm still trying to track down.  So if you ever see an entry in your point log that says "delete me" please let me know.

wwdiary - version 3.7.4 posted to Android Market

Wow...  let my start off again by saying thank you to all the people who have donated!  I'm glad you like the app enough to send some money my way.   And while some who have donated have been VERY GENEROUS ( you know who you are ), you can donate in any amount you feel like.  The donations are handled by Paypal. You can find the donate button in the upper right hand corner of the blog, and thank you in advance for your support.

This update follows on the heels of the last one with some fixes to bugs that have been reported on the blog and in the forums.

  • The favorites list may now be sorted by name.
  • Fixed: Barcode scanning would result in odd point display behavior and item point recording.
  • Fixed: Choosing an item from the typeahead dropdown list would not fill out remembered cal/fat/fiber values.

wwdiary - version 3.7.3 posted to Android Market

wwdiary - version 3.6.6 posted to Android Market

Bugs Bugs Bugs...

Ok I squashed a few of the reported ones. Thank you everyone for sending error reports and posting issues you've run into. 3.6.5 is up and fixes these 4 bugs:
  • Error starting up when there is no database ( was an error in sql syntax )
  • App though weekly points were activity points... ( i blame copy, paste... )
  • Food names with an apostrophe ( ' ) in them was causing an error when adding a food entry.
  • Some error I saw related to barcodes had incorrect values and would cause a crash.   No one reported this but I saw it reported in some error reports,

wwdiary - version 3.6.5 posted to Android Market

So it's finally here: serving multiplier
I know it took a while, but there were tons of changes under the covers that I needed to make so PLEASE if you find a bug, head over to the forum and report it, or post a comment here.

So as you can see here, there is a new textbox on the right.  This box is for the serving multiplier and it defaults to "1".   When you record a food entry, the point value will be multiplied by the number of servings.  All checklist items will be multiplied as well, so make sure that they are set to a value for a single serving.

The bar underneath is a quick slide serving picker that will move in increments of 0.5 from 0 to 4.  If you need more servings, or a different fraction, you can edit the text box directly.

There's also been a fix to the barcode scanner.  It will now remember
the descriptions and point values for items you scan and save.  On next scan, it will autofill all point a checklist values for any saved barcode.

If the multipler is anything other than 1, descriptions will now have an " x #" suffix that will show you that you had # servings of an item.  This text is not stored in the food description, so if you have older entries for  something like "Wine x 2" you'll probably need to edit it.

I'll be working on a way to present a list of all food descriptions so that you can edit or delete them to help clean up older entries that are unwanted.   For now, unless you want to go back and edit each occurance of an item you want to change, you'll see them pop up in the suggestion list if any past day had recorded that entry.

So there you have it.  If you like these changes and you haven't donated yet, please consider sending some loose change my way via the donate button on the right side of the blog.

wwdiary - version 3.5.3 posted to Android Market

I've rearranged some of the UI elements in this version.  I needed more room in the point entry screen for the serving multiplier that I'll be implementing later.

I've also reordered the entry of calories/fat/fiber in the food point calculator screen, so be careful the next time you use the calculator. It had been a popular request to change the order, so I did. :)

Holy weightloss, batman!

From those of you who have submitted anonymous data, I've been looking over it and after doing some statistical analysis on it, it would appear that users of the wwdairy program have lost a combined total of over SEVEN THOUSAND pounds!!!

I know there are more of you out there who choose not to report, or don't use the weightlog feature.  So that number may be much higher.  Keep up the good work guys!   I'll try to get a realtime-ish counter going on the blog and/or forum so that you can see the running total.

wwdiary - version 3.5.1 posted to Android Market

This version should fix the problem where activity points and weekly points were both being used inappropriately  when balancing the daily points.

wwdiary - version 3.5 posted to Android Market

This version contains an urgent fix for entering in food and activity descriptions.   Before it was possible to enter in a food item or activity item with no name.   This should ensure that something is entered before you can log it.

It also contains a new preference for allowing the submission of anonymous data.   If you don't want this enabled, go to preferences and un-check the preference.  This will allow me to, in the future, do things like figure out an estimate of the total amount of weight lost using my app.

wwdiary - version 3.4.8 posted to Android Market

There will be more improvements in this area in the future. :)

One of the best emails I've gotten

I got this email a while ago from a user of WWDiary.  His name is John and he made my day :)

I wanted to take a moment to personally thank you for the creation of, and all your continued work towards the WWDiary app. I am a lifetime WW member who had fallen off the wagon for quite a few years for one reason or another. I had tried to get back into the habit of writing down what I was eating but just couldn't get back into the swing of it. Your app has made it fun and extremely easy to get back on track and get back into good eating habits. Having the diary, points finder, and weight tracker all in once place that is always in my pocket gives me no excuse for not being able to account for what I'm eating.

I've just sent a donation to express my gratitude for your hard work, that in turn has helped me get beyond the "hump" that was too steep to climb these past years. I'm six weeks in, down 11 pounds and still going strong towards getting back to my goal weight. Thank you once again for your dedication to this app and for so selflessly offering it to so many with the same goal in common.

John
P.S. I'm really looking forward to Weight Log enhancements, especially if it will do the math for me to show how much weight has been lost, keep up the great work!

Today WWDiary has over 35,000 active users and a bunch of great ratings on the Android Marketplace.  I've gotten a phone in the Google Developer Contest and donations from grateful users are still trickling in.   So thank all of YOU for the kind words, suggestions, and donations!

By the way, don't forget to check out the thread on the forum where everyone can post their weight-loss results!

This update includes the weight log enhancements listed below as well as some bug fixes and extra debugging.

New weightlog enhancements

Now you can track weight goals by long-pressing on a weight entry and setting it as the start of your goal.   Every entry since the start of the goal will display the loss(negative numbers) or gain (positive numbers) since the start of the goal.

What do you think?

wwdiary - version 3.3.3 posted to Android Market

wwdiary - version 3.3.2 posted to Android Market

This update will hopefully fix some of the database errors that occasionally happen when inserting new foods.

Bought hosting; new forum

Check out the new forum, and register for an account or sign in with your Google Account ( no registration needed ).

There's currently a general category and a support category you can post discussions in.  So if you need help with wwdiary, other users may be able to help you out there.

I'm paying for hosting with the donation money that I've gotten so far.  Hopefully I can add new features like build my own food lookup database.   And if the donations keep coming in, I'll be that much closer to being able to implement some of the ideas I have for the app.

wwdiary - version 3.3 posted to Android Market

Expanded barcode functionality!
There is point lookup for items you've entered in the past, I still have not found a service that is compatible with my needs for data lookups.  It seems most sites are very protective of their data ( I would be too, it's alot of work to collect that much info ).

Anyway...
When you scan a barcode, it will try to look it up in the phone database.  If found, it will fill out the information you used for it last time.  If it doesn't find anything in the phone database, it will do a product lookup.

If it finds something in the search it will place it in a textbox for you to edit if you would like.  If it doesn't find anything you can enter in a custom description.  Then it will save that data to the phone database for use the next time you scan that barcode.

Let me know how it works, I'll probably be tweaking things till I get it just right.
The more you use it, the more useful it will be.   As you add barcodes to the phone database, it will remember them.

wwdiary - version 3.2.9 posted to Android Market

This version has sharper images in it for higher resolution devices like the Nexus One and the Droid.

I had to change or recreate some images because I either didn't save the source images, or they were simply lower res images and it couldn't be helped(arrows on the date changer), so those were remade.

This update also upgrades the internal database for some future work I'll be doing with barcode support.

Please leave feedback here on how often the barcode scanner finds the foods you enter.   I'm interested to know how complete the database I'm using is.

wwdiary - Daily Point Allowance errors

If you are getting an incorrect daily point allowance, please check the point calculator in the preferences.  There was a bug ( still have not found it yet ) that may have blanked out some information ( like gender ).  Please make sure this information is accurate and check your points again.

wwdiary - version 3.2.2 posted to Android Market

Experimental barcode support!

You will be asked to allow permission for internet access for this feature.
SDcard access is for database backup feature.

Also, for the barcode reader to work, you will need to install another application that handles the reading.   You can find out more information about the barcode reading application here.

I expect to add more features to this in the future.  For instance, when you scan a 2 pack of General Mills Cheerios Twin pack, you get "GM CHERRIOS TWIN PACK" and you might just want to enter "Cherrios", so there's still work to do to let you customize the text after you scan ( and save that customization for when you scan again ).

It also adds quick actions to the view so that you don't have to press menu for everything.

I may have fixed some bugs in there too, but I'm sure I created more than I fixed :)
It was quite a large change, so bear with me if there are any force-closes or error reports.

Once again, thank you to all the people who've donated, you guys rock!

wwdiary - What do you think?

They work like the rating bar widget in android.  You can slide left or single click on the amount of... stuff... in whatever you ate.

I only have the user interface working right now, it doesn't record anything.  I don't think I'll be adding oil and protien.  While important, they are small in number (checklist) and easy to spot on the food list...   But if you have any compelling reasons why I should reconsider, let me know!

I may move this away from the food entry dialog and into its own checklist dialog...  Not sure what I want to do yet... this way though, I could tie a value of 2 veggies to a food item called "giant bowl of broccoli" and it would always be remembered as such.

This versions removes the cap on activity points that one can earn in a day.   The cap was in place because the paper tracker only had 28 boxes for a day, but several people (who are WAY more active than me, btw) have asked me to remove the cap.  I really couldn't find any info online as to if there really was a cap... so it's removed.

I've also been getting some error reports from some users trying to edit entries in the pointlog.  I know what the error is that's happening, but I'm still not sure why.   So I've added some extra information to the error report.   If anyone sees this error report when choosing to edit or delete an entry, please send it.

Todo list

I've taken most of your suggestions that I've been holding on to in email conversations and made them into a todo list over on the right side of the page.  Been pretty busy lately, but I should be able to send out 1 or 2 updates this weekend for some of the more minor changes.

Google is sending me a free phone!

I received an email a few days ago from Google saying that the wwdiary app qualified as part of their "Developer Seeding Program".  They are sending out free phones (NexusOne / Verizon Droid) to their "top developers" with more then 5000 unique downloads, and a rating of 3.5 stars or better.

Right now wwdairy has over 21,000 active installs and a rating of around 4.5 stars, so I'd like to thank every one of you who has commented with such good ratings on the Android Market!   The device I'll get is random (nexus/droid) but I'll make a new post in week or two when the phone gets here :)

Donations...

I've gotten requests from a few people on the market comments and in email to include some form of donation or payment.  Well, I can't charge for the app, the tax implications are too much for me to worry about and this really is just a hobby of mine.  But if you like the app and you would like to show your gratitude in a monetary form, feel free to do so in any amount you think is appropriate.

I've read that to accept donations to me personally I need to make the purpose of the donation clear so I must stress that there should be no expectations of service associated with this donation, it is merely a gesture of appreciation.  Any donation made should not be intended as payment in any way.  The wwdiary app will remain free of charge, and I will never place any ads in it.

wwdiary - version 3.1.2 posted to Android Market

UPDATE: Version 3.0, 3.1, and 3.1.1 had bugs in them and only very few people who sit on their update button should have them. :)   I'm sorry for that, serves me right for staying up so late :(

Enjoy weight tracking, everyone!

There's a new preference to tun on/off auto-updating of the point allowance, the what's new in the app is wrong :(

This post gives a good overview of the feature, so I'll save some virtual ink by letting you check it out there.

The weight tracking feature is done...

I'll just be testing it out personally for a day or so before having it go live on the market.   Those are not my actual weight values in case you were wondering....   :)

I plan to add more enhancements to this, such as long-pressing a particular entry and having the option to set it as the start of a new goal...  with dynamic calculations for each row since then showing your progress towards that goal.   (things like    -1.5lbs  -1% )  etc.

Right now, daily points are calculated based on the previous week's weighins.   You may weigh in as many times as you like (once per day) during a week.   But the last weighin for the week will be used as the weight value for the next week's calculations.   If your point reset day is Tuesday, then Monday is the last day you can weigh in to affect the next week point calculations.

In order to use the automatic point recalculation, you must have at one point used the point allowance calculator built into the settings screen.   Those values are needed when recalculating point allowances.   I'll be adding visual reminders for all this stuff in the app once I'm satisfied that it's working right.

Also:
Please do not stand on your phone to weigh in...        :)

Just a peek...

I thought some of you may like to see a sneak peak at the next feature :)  I'm going to close the poll and call it a close victory for weight tracking.

Don't worry though, I fully intend to implement water/veg tracking, and I've still been thinking about the best visual interface for it.   BTW, if you have any suggestions on this, I'd be more than happy to hear them, just post them as a comment!

wwdiary - version 2.9.5 posted to Android Market

Added backup/restore database feature.
Preferences menu is now available from what's new screen(in case of future corrupt database issues). You will now be able to restore a database backup if you cannot load the app.

I don't anticipate this being a problem in the future, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Also, this is great if you change phones...    Like when I go buy a NexusOne in a month or so :)

Database backup/restore working...

I wanted to get this feature in before I did any more database upgrades JUST IN CASE! :)
Looks like the weight tracking feature is winning in the poll.

Thanks to all of you who left comments here and on the market, and for leaving such generous ratings. ;)

wwdiary - version 2.9 posted to Android Market

Added an activity points calculator, enjoy!

wwdiary - problems opening the app

I've identified an issue when the activity points feature was first introduced.  In order to track more than just food, I needed to upgrade the database to add fields for extra information.   At the same time that I did this, I removed copy-protection from the app ( copy protection adds space, and is irrelevant if the app is free ).

Well there appears to be a problem with android when it tries to upgrade a database on an app if the copy protection status is changed.  If you are getting a crash immediately after opening the app, or if you are unable to get past the what's new section of the app, then you will probably have to uninstall the app and then reinstall from the market.

This should never happen again ( since there will be no need to adjust copy protection on the app again ), but if it does, let me know.
